I believe the program is a package deal...the meetings, sponsors, 12th step work..and the steps. It is my feelings also that the rooms are the fellowship and recovery is in the 12 steps.
Until I did them no one could convince me that anything would change...even though I heard the great recovery changes in people's lives...you but not me is how I felt.
When I was mid way through my ninth step..I actually saw the change..even though people were already telling me they saw it.
The promises started to come true and being a atheist..or so I thought..it was really because I lost faith...I also had my awakening to my HP.
One of the changes I felt right away was the excitement about living a new life - the hope I felt that today and every day after would be better - the freedom. I felt a release of bondage, a release from that ball and chain. Now anything was posssible. Doing the Steps, serving God, AA and others has provided for more change to occur in my life - positive change. For once, I wasn't always consumed with me, me, me.
