Last night my favorite slippee came back to our home group, fresh from another detox. I've sponsored this man off and on for the past five or six years. Gave him plenty of 24 hour chips, month chips, six month chips, a couple of one year chips and even a two year chip - all as his sponsor.

This time I'm thinking about recommending another sponsor to him - a man with more sobriety than me who is new to our group, has been comming regularly and needs to pick up a pigeon.

There is part of me that wants to continue sponsoring this guy as we both share the same minority spiritual views in the fellowship. Maybe we can be just friends?

Well...

I never had a formal sponsor..even tho I tried to...so my AA friends were my lifeline.

Last week I gave up sponsoring my 3 women...after over 3 years of working with them.

All were stuck in the Step 4 rut...a new perspective might just rev them up
. LOL

Ted, if you have sponsored this guy that many times, I would go with your "gut" instinct - which seems to be suggesting another sponsor. I think this guy if kinda comfortable with you as his sponsor and some "new blood" might be just what he needs!!

I have been in similar situations and my thinking was.....well, I believe I have given you as much as I can - as your SPONSOR - and here you are again. In the same place as you have been many times before. I am more than willing to be part of your CLOSE net support "family", however, I would like for you to talk to so and so......

This was hard for me to do the first time, and even though it's was difficult for me to admit, there was a part of ME that had been determined to help this person "get it" - damnit!!!

I came to realize that it was real okay for a sponsee to move on to another "teacher". That, sometimes, it takes several different people expertise - for the entire MESSAGE to be carried thru to someone.....

I was still a very big part of this person - finally - receiving the gift I had been given and so was another.....as a sponsor. Sometimes, like in this case, it was more about ME wanting to be THE SPONSOR that break the wall down. It helped me learn that I was one of the carriers of the message to this person - now it was someone else's time to carry there message of sponsorship.

Boy, hope that made just a little bit of sense.....

I don't have a clue!
I've had lots of program friends who have helped more than they probably would ever know. They are technically like sponsors, too.
I know I just try to carry the message, and leave the results up to God.
I probably screw up, a lot, too.
Am sorry...I just don't have any answers, either.
Sam
