Comments on how the following statement taken from the Doctors Opinion, applies to you and your exerience would be greatly appreciated. It does of course hold a special meaning for myself.
"Men and women drink essentially because they like the effect produced by alcohol. The sensation is so elusive that, while they admit it is injurious, they cannot after a time differentiate the true from the false. To them, their alcoholic life seems the only normal one. They are restless, irritable and discontented, unless they can again experience the sense of ease and comfort which comes at once by taking a few drinks - drinks which they see others taking with impunity...Unless this person can experience an entire psychic change there is very little hope of his recovery."

I actually did like the taste of a good beer, or a "not bottom shelf" bourbon. I had to be drunk enough not to notice the taste before you could get me to touch scotch or tequila. (Scotch always tasted the way a burned-out house smells, to me.) By the end of my drinking career, however, I went for the highest alcohol content/dollar.
The "sense of ease and comfort", for me, was the fact that booze took away the necessity of feeling and dealing with those feelings; of facing life and meeting its challenges. Booze took me to my private little twilight zone, where the rest of the world could be kept safely at bay.
When in danger, when in doubt,
Run in circles, scream and shout.

Hey there God_Chaser,
In response to your quote from "The Doctor's Opinion" I would call your attention to the date it was written. Medicine, as all studies, has not stood still since the 1930's. While not taking away anything from the importance of this article in the Big Book, a considerable amount of understanding has occurred since that point in time.
There have been good studies conducted which now show that alcoholism is a physiological condition and not a psychological condition (although alcoholics may have psychological problems just as "normies" may). There is good evidence that in the alcoholic there is an addiction and differentiates this person from both the problem drinker and the alcohol abuser.
Rather than typing a long synopsis out of books, I would refer you to "Beyond the Influence" by Katherine Ketcham who also co-authored "Under the Influence."
This realization of alcohol addiction was also the topic of several seminars just last June at the University of Utah's School On Alcoholism and Other Drug Dependencies.

Ummmmmmm......I must admit that I NEVER drank for the taste - unless it was a Martini! lol I always drank for the effect. I remember a routine I had while drinking. Instead of eating, I would get a bowl of HOT peppers and eat those while drinking one ice cold beer from the freezer after another. Well, the peppers were so damn hot that I would go thru several beers very quickily.....until I "felt" better. I usually did this when I felt badly from a drunk the day before.
The next thing that really hits home for me is the pyschic change part. I believe I have had one and thank God for that daily!!!
